HTC Desire 820 review: Gives You The Big Impression

HTC Desire 820 Review

HTC has often relied on its prowess in the design department to strut out award winning products like HTC One and HTC One M8. But good looking phones don't really translate into more profits, and who else than HTC can validate the point for us. The company has slowly but gradually realized its one-dimensional strategy will no longer work, and this is how the latest Desire series made its way to the market.

We're talking about the Desire 820, which was launched in 2014 and deemed as the first device to pack Snapdragon 615. Priced at around Rs 21,000 the phone has intense competition right now.

What is it?
HTC Desire 820 is company's first smartphone to pack Snapdragon 615 octa-core CPU. The phone's built is reminiscent to most of HTC mid-range offering. You get 4G LTE support as well. Sized at 5.5-inch, Desire 820 comes across as a phablet that is easy to use and handle.

Who is it for?
The fact that HTC is known for making solid phones should help its case. As for who should really have an eye on Desire 820? Anyone with the urge to take the phablet plunge, comfortable moving away from Samsung and Nokia, and willing to spend over 20k on a well-packaged phone, will like owning this device.

Design
Desire 820 is a giant-looking phone (for its size) with comparatively big bezels on the side, virtual buttons on the bottom and peculiar coloured borders. You might or might not like the make of Desire 820; as the body finishing is plastic which is glossy in nature.

It's got a unibody design wherein the back panel is non-removable; but having said that, at 7.7 mm it's pretty slim for a giant.
You'll find the phone bulging out of your pockets and fairly visible to any passerby.

The SIM slot is available on top-left side and right next to it is the slot for extra storage card. The power and volume buttons are placed on the right side for easy access.

Only if the blues could have been avoided; some might like it (mostly women will), but some might really feel the touch up is attracts too much attention.

Display
Desire 820 sports a 5.5-inch display with 1280x720p resolution and offers Corning Glass 3 protection, aiding rough and tough usage. Now, this is where HTC could have done better with the overall quality. For similar price point, you're getting the OnePlus One with full-HD display and the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 4 will offer the same. So, why can't HTC improve on display aspect? That said, we like the display quality which just about manages to impress us with its viewing angles and colour reproduction; neither too heavy nor too light on the eyes. The big form size helps you in watching movies, play games and surf web on-the-go without much fuss; outdoor visibility didn't bother us much either. However, for this price we expected more from HTC.

Hardware
It packs the latest octa-core Snapdragon 615 CPU with 2GB RAM and has16GB storage, which can be expanded further up to 128 GB, on offer. The phablet has been equipped with a 13MP rear and 8MP front cameras. With dual-SIM connectivity on offer, you can make use of 2G/3G and even 4G LTE (whenever it is available) in addition to which you get GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB among others. (Note: The phone supports only nano-SIM, so get yourselves a SIM adapter before you go ahead and buy the phone.)

How does it perform?

We really wanted to see was if the new 8-core chipset can withstand daily abuse and still offer performance efficiency. Much to our delight, it didn't disappoint and the phone makes full merry owing to it. No heating, no major lagging issues sighted and managed multi-tasking of all proportions with utmost ease. Now that's something you'd really want from a phone these days and after many debacles, HTC has finally found the right match. Our shout goes to Qualcomm for delivering quality, stable chipset that phone makers can truly rely on for devices.

Did we come across any major hiccups with the phone? Not something that's going to bother you on a regular basis, but still be ready for some odd lapses in stability that shouldn't pose much of an issue.

Camera
HTC has decent shooters in the high-end segment, but can they bring the same magic to the lower rung as well? Somehow, we managed to like the phone's camera both; daylight and low light and for this pricing, it makes for a decent option. Daylight images were crisp, detailed but loses colours for some strange reason. And on the low-light front, without impressing heavily with shades of noise visible and blur images (part of low light with most phones).

Will it last long?

HTC Desire 820's battery impressed us the most (not something that really adds up to being good?). With normal usage, the phone manages to last for over 18 hours with heavy-to-mid usage and that's decent for a big size phablet. With such numbers, Desire 820 falls in the OnePlus One segment with consistent battery life that will last you for more than a day and half while using normally.

What do we have to say about it?
HTC Desire 820 is a well-made (albeit with glossy plastic body) device. We liked its slick interface, performance, camera quality and not-so-bad battery life. But do you pay upwards of Rs 22k for this? Not right now atleast, you have a similar specd product Yu Yureka selling for less than 10k and that's good too. The only thing that might incline you towards opting for this device is the brand name; its reputation for building quality devices; and the fact that there's no flash drama to buy it. Enough said, buy it if you really need a big device with big life.
